Portrait of Holly Kay Parsons

artist statement

I’m a sculptor, photographer and maker. I take inspiration from long hikes in the wilderness, observing the effects of time and the elements while moving through a landscape. I have a deep connection with organic materials and forms, and employ these in my sculptural work. Many of my artworks incorporate branches from fallen trees and wood sourced from discarded domestic objects.

As well as sculptures and photographs, I also create digital collages and physical collages with wood, textiles, paint and other materials. Some of the pieces I create are functional objects such as chairs and bowls, and others are purely aesthetic objects.

I find the sound and rhythm of a mallet and chisel on wood to be soothing and meditative during the process of carving by hand. The carving process is representative of the external influences that shape who we become. Through this work I explore themes of identity and the subconscious mind. I hope the viewer feels some of my wonder for the natural world, while exploring their own associations with the work.
